Known Issues
The capacitors in this PSU tend to dry out rather than leak. This can result in the primary side bulk capacitors & secondary side filter capacitors failing open.
Symptoms of failing capacitors
- PSU starts browning out
- PSU relays clicking on and off
- PSU Warning/Alert LED illuminated
- Primary PSU unable to run independently of secondary PSU/ vise versa
- PSU functional when not under heavy load
Disassembly Notes
Power supplies handle very high voltages & current. Improper discharging of large capacitors can result in severe injuries or death. Do your research on proper capacitor discharging and electrical safety before attempting to recap any power supplies.
Original Parts
Replacing the primary side and secondary side capacitors is typically enough to result in a working power supply, however there are other electrolytic capacitors on the board (see tables below). There are also a few ceramic and polypropylene capacitors that are generally unlikely to fail, but will be listed for completeness.
