The 5V models require a centre positive 5V supply, and while they have over-voltage protection they can still be damaged. The 9V versions require a centre positive 9V supply, and have an internal regulator that generates 5V. Most (all?) motherboards can be either type and can be changed over by removing and adding components.

Solid colour screen
Causes
- BIOS checks failed at power on.
Solutions
- Blue screen - all checks OK, cartridge not inserted/faulty.
- Red screen - work RAM error.
- Green screen - palette RAM error.
- Yellow screen - video RAM error.
- Magenta screen - BIOS self check error (i.e. checksum).
- Cyan screen - memory card error.
